New figures reveal significant shifts in Irish passport applications during 2025. According to new figures obtained by the TG4 current affairs programme 7LÁ from the Department of Foreign Affairs under the Freedom of Information Act show that:
Applications from Irish citizens living outside the State jumped by almost 35% from 200,609 to 270,077 (+69,468) in 2025.
Overall passport applications fell by 12% last year from 1,061,629 to 933,121 (-128,508) in 2025.
From almost one million applications in 2025 only 302, or 0.03% were made through the Irish language.

In statement from the Department of foreign Affairs: 2025 marked the five-year anniversary of the introduction of Covid-19 travel restrictions, which had an impact on the demand for passports in 2020. As children's passports are valid for five years, this led to reduced applications for child renewal passports in 2025.
