To Officer Ella French
More noble than the angels
there she stood
doing what the bravest of angels
never quite could.
Our officer guarding all of Chicago
with only all of her life! -
presenting her courageous human heart
brave, strong - fragile yet fearless
to all the dangers of a treacherous Chicago night!
Angels live forever
and cannot be shot or killed -
yet our officer
gave all her very self
as a human shield of living proof
that she was a truer warrior angel
beyond what even
a Saint Michael warrior angel
could ever give
or in any great mission fulfill.
For Officer French gave her human heart
- as only tears from Saint Michael
and his Army of Angels
dotted all Chicago streets . . .
on that August seventh clear Chicago night
where doing her job - cruel fate - our officer did bravely meet.
And Saint Michael's heart was broken
with all Chicago hearts -
knowing this our officer
gave the ultimate upon her mission
in the dangerous Chicago dark . . .
. . . in a war here that seems
never to stop!
that only the bravest of the brave
could ever dare to fight
above, beyond and on top of
what ever God's Own angels try to give
by all of heaven's night!
Yet angels though giving all -
cannot yet give themselves to die!
And every protective angel knows well this!
- as they race to honor our officer
across now heavy rain-filled Chicago skies with their kiss
Only a human could give all in this way
beyond what God's angels
could ever give on any day or night!
- for angels guard and watch over
with all their hearts -
yet cannot offer the gift
of their very life!
Only the most chosen of humans
with a calling upon their life
could defend so, serve and protect
with all their own sacred human strength
and precious shimmering God-given human light.
For far beyond any ever-living ancient angel's
ability to give -
our officer giving all - gave all gloriously!
so that we in Chicago
could one more day safely live!
They say Chicago is protected by angels
- yet too many shootings
leave most to doubt
that "prayer" . . .
Yet look into the clear blue skies
of a safer Chicago summer afternoon
and still see our officer's
noble spirit in body and in soul
exactly precisely! - still on duty everywhere!
- guarding us, serving us, watching us,
whispering her noble prayer,
"But some had to give all!"
upon the sweeter, safer breezes
of Chicago's summer air . . .
. . . guarding us sure!
and offering still all she can forever
in her great care
toward us and toward heaven on high!
For when one gives all forever
in such a way -
they can still remain an officer here
with their sacrifice burning as great protection
like blessed lightening fire through all Chicago streets
and upon all Chicago skies! . . .
glowing heaven to earth
and earth to heaven
as still an officer's protective illumined prayer . . .
The radiance of our police-woman's wordless sacrifice
is left to stain and linger on Chicago streets and skies
and only greatly bless us here!
And humble angels who will never walk
boldly through that door of death
reverence one of greater ability and courage now
and simply bow their heads . . .
as Saint Michael sheds
his poor angelic heart-felt tears! . . .
though a warrior of the greatest valor
- who can never come near
the gift of giving all
that our officer did - without one fear!
And never fear!
This officer remains.
She would not leave us
on the battlefield alone
but guards our lives as she lives again! -
as she is still at work
floating all over Chicago
watching and protecting our dear Chicago home!
-Think of her, pray for her
whenever we drive or walk down an avenue
where we think we are alone . . .
Oh crooks and criminals beware!
For there is still this officer on duty here!
and do not dare
to capture us by any of your crime or strife.
We look beyond to Chicago skies
and feel our blessed officer's presence
now on duty both through day and wee hours of night
we will look to our skies
and see her face!
see her courage darting everywhere
all over the place!
- as we ask her
to ask God
to guard Chicago within His Care.
Yes! look now to the soft blue
safer summer skies of Chicago! - our City so dear!
and ask this nobler-than-the-angels officer
thus! - to place our prayer!
Gaze up today - look up toward clouds
to honor our officer unto God!
And ask her to work for Chicago
now once more!
- as in our hearts, we'll hear her "Yes."
and feel her gently nod
- for she is ever Chicago's finest!
forever on the beat
right here in each and every ward!
