The members of The Francis O'Neill club extend deepest condolences to the Heffernan family on the passing of our dear Ed.

For many Chicago & Milwaukee set dancers, Ed was the first to welcome them to the dance and get them out on the floor. His enthusiasm and generosity helped even the most hesitant dancers feel welcome on the dance floor.

May Ed's memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Edward Joseph Heffernan Jr
September 6, 1948 - May 14, 2025
Edward Joseph Heffernan Jr.; beloved brother, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, at the age of 76. He was ushered into Heaven by a host of angels as his loving son, Joel, sat by his side.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, September 6, 1948, the loving son of Edward J. and Anna E. (Urban) Heffernan. Ed was proud of his Chicago heritage showing loyalty and reckless abandon support for the Bears, White Sox and Notre Dame football. He was a graduate of St. Mel High School, Chicago. After studying at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Ed served his country in the United States Army 1970 – 1972, during the Vietnam War. Accounting was his career, but seeking joy with family and friends was his calling. Ed was a man who was deeply generous to all. His rewards were immeasurable by the love, support, and admiration that he received. Also, he was known as a man of deep integrity, vibrant opinions, and enduring compassion. He was a source of pride and love for his family.

Ed found great joy in Irish dancing and the remarkable companions he met through this element of fellowship, heritage, and artistic expression. His pleasure in dancing was only surpassed by the opportunities to teach the beauty of the dance to others. Traveling the country and the world provided endless stories of adventure and historical knowledge for Ed to share. However, his favorite travels were to family and friends to share a pint, glass of wine, or simple cup of tea.

Ed is survived by his beloved son, Joel; treasured daughter-in-law, Amy (Looney); and most precious of all, his granddaughters, Grace and Alana. He is also survived by his brother, James Heffernan, and his children, Robert (Jennifer); Paul (Lisa); and Carrie (Michael Buis); his best friend, John Fina; great-nieces, great-nephews, and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna (Urban) Heffernan, and his brother Thomas.

Private interment; Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Illinois. Celebration of Life being planned for the near future.
