THE 60TH ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO FOLK FESTIVAL is poised to celebrate folk music old and new in just a few weeks!  The University of Chicago Folklore Society offers two evening concerts in Leon Mandel Hall (1131 E. 57th St.), Friday and Saturday, 14-15 February 2020.  Free music and dance workshops will take place during the day on Saturday, 15 February, in nearby Ida Noyes Hall (1212 E. 59th St.). There is plentiful free parking on the street, and tickets go on sale in early January 2020.

The 2020 artist lineup:

BILL AND THE BELLES– Based out of Johnson City, TN, this band wants to you to know that good old-fashioned country music is fun, not fossil. Kris Truelsen (guitar, vocals), Kalia Yeagle (fiddle, vocals), Helena Hunt (banjo, banjo-ukulele, vocals) and Andrew Small (bass) purvey up-to-the-minute roots country music of the 1920s-1940s.

MARIACHI SIRENAS– This all-women ensemble brings the genre of mariachi music to the Windy City.  They are the beginning of a community of strong women working together to promote the folkloric arts of Latin America.  ¡Que viva la mujer y su música mexicana!

DANNY PAISLEY & THE SOUTHERN GRASS – The next generation of the legendary bluegrass band takes the stage! The band plays powerful, unadorned, and intense traditional bluegrass.  With Danny Paisley on guitar, Southern Grass continues the Paisley family tradition adding Danny's son Ryan on mandolin.  Southern Grass continues the rich musical heritage started by Bob Paisley and Ted Lundy, with Lundy's sons T.J. (fiddle) and Bobby (bass and vocals) bridging the gap between old-time and bluegrass music. Mark Delaney (formerly with the Country Gentlemen and Darren Beachley & Legends of the Potomac) on banjo rounds out the band.

JIMMY BREAUX TRIO – Put on your dancin’ shoes! Jimmy Breaux of Lafayette, LA, is acknowledged to be one of the best Cajun accordionists of the modern era. Formerly the accordion player for the Grammy Award-winning group BeauSoleil, Breaux now tours with his own trio, featuring Zach Fusilier on fiddle and Randy Vidrine on guitar.

ORQUESTA CHARANGUEO – Dance to the Afro-Cuban beat!  Charanga is a style from Cuba, featuring the unique blend of French flute and violins, guiro, congas, timbales, piano, bass, and vocals.   The ensemble plays a wide range of Afro-Cuban jazz and dance styles like mambo, guajira, guanguanco, son-montuno, and chacha in both the pre-Fidel Cuban era and later New York styles.

MEDICINE LINE WITH JAMIE FOX AND SCOTTY LEACH – The Medicine Line was the 49th Parallel dividing Big Sky US states and western Canada and respected by all.  Jamie Fox plays Métis fiddle music with foot percussion, rooted in a mixture of Celtic, French, and Native American cultures.  The Michif tradition of fiddle playing on the Fort Belknap Reservation was on its last legs just as Jamie fell in love with the tunes. People along the Montana Hi-Line were delighted to see a youngster taking on a music style that was in jeopardy of vanishing.  Fiddler and pianist Scotty Leach has long been immersed in folk music traditions, moving easily between Appalachian old-time, to New England dance music to Cape Breton style.

Piper PATRICK LYNCH of the City of Chicago Pipe Bank will open each evening concert with a rousing medley of tunes on the Scottish warpipes.

Artists are subject to change.  Nightly concert information follows.

Free workshops, dances and jam sessions take place in Ida Noyes Hall all day Saturday, 15 February.

Please watch the website, www.uofcfolk.org, for updates and workshop details.
