Dan Burke, the founding father of both the Emerald Society of Illinois, and the Bagpipes & Drums of the Emerald Society - Chicago Police Department has passed

He had the inspiration to gather a few individuals and in 1975 started the Emerald Society of Illinois. This organization would follow in the footsteps of the City of New York Police Department who had a Society in existence. The Illinois Society grew to at one time over 1,000 members.

After the tragic deaths of two Chicago Police Officers in 1982 he utilized his organizational skills to start the Bagpipes & Drums of the Emerald Society.

Dan was a Chicago Police Officer for 40 years working mostly on the Westside where he grew up.

Dan was the first President holding office until 1983.  While he was the President, a tragic assassination of two police officers occurred in 1982.  One of the officers was known to say to everyone, that if anything ever happened to him, he wanted a dozen bag pipers at this funeral.

Dan attempted to gather a band from Chicago to pay honors to these officers and failed.  All he could get was a lone piper. Not the type of guy to give up, he contacted his fellow brothers at NYPD. Twenty Six NYPD officers from their band traveled to Chicago and paid honors to these officers.

A few months later, at the Emerald Society annual dinner dance, then Mayor Jane Byrne was in attendance and requested to say a few words. In essence, she said to the audience that a City like Chicago should not have to rely on others to Honor our Fallen.

she then called Dan forward and presented him a check for $5,000 telling him to "Get a band started".  Again, Dan had to utilize his organizational skills and called for members of the Emerald Society to form what is now the Bagpipes & Drums of the Emerald Society - Chicago Police Department.

Its a long story, but there were many naysayers out there who were saying the band would never accomplish anything, much less last.
This coming May, 2021 we will be celebrating our 39th Anniversary.

Daniel E. Burke was a special kind of man and police officer. May he rest in peace
