Homelessness is on the rise throughout the country, including in Illinois—be part of the solution

Time For Homes is calling for everyone to pit their ideas against others to find innovative solutions to tackle the homelessness problem once and for all. The Case For Change competition is a biannual event organized to explore diverse solutions to help end the homelessness epidemic.

“We’ve removed as many barriers to participation as possible—the event is offered at no cost to attendees, and they may take part from wherever they are through our virtual platform. We know not all solutions come from expected sources and we want to make sure everyone that wants to has the opportunity to compete.”

Adam Stojanovski, Associate Director, Time For Homes

In this competition, attendees participate in teams, of two or more individuals, and work to find a solution to a problem in one or more of the competition’s themes. The two-day long event features short workshops and panel discussions from our fellows, partners, and other experts.

At the close of the Case for Change competition, teams will submit a document with their findings and present their work to our adjudicators. Finalists will then present their work to the event attendees for consideration. Winners will receive prizes and get the chance to work directly with Time For Homes to advocate for their solution in the real world.

Attendees may participate from anywhere. Time For Homes’ virtual platform enables people from everywhere, including Illinois, to take part in this open forum.

Participating teams will choose a theme from a list of six themes which are—Affordable Housing, Health Factors and Determinates Food Insecurity, Housing Insecurity, LGBTQ Homelessness, Restorative Justice, and Youth/Family Homelessness. The teams can select more than one theme if they find that the issues within these themes overlap.

All teams will first be required to choose a problem area which they plan to investigate, selecting from the six themes defined above. Once a theme is chosen, teams will then have to define a deeper niche within this theme. For example, if a team chooses to focus on the “Restorative Justice” theme, they might then choose to investigate the question: “How has recidivism within the criminal justice system led to increased rates of housing insecurity among repeat offenders?” Teams will then be required to research this niche, finding background and context highlighting how it is a problem and what the state of the problem is.

Once teams have sufficiently explored their question, teams will then look to find a solution to the problem. Solutions may include, but are not limited to, anyone or any combination of the following:

Improved policy solutions
Improved infrastructure
Improved technology
A new organization aimed at tackling this problem specifically
A new initiative within Time for Homes or another organization

Solutions will need to be backed by research supporting their efficacy. However, solutions that have never been implemented before are encouraged. Therefore, the supportive research does not need to show previous examples of such a solution, but evidence for why such a solution may be effective. Solutions will need to be scoped out in detail, with attendees describing exactly what the solution is, who will enact the solution, who the solution will impact, who are the other relevant stakeholders, a timeline for such a solution, a budget for such a solution, and alternate implementations of the solution and why this specific implementation was chosen.
