Andrea Beaton and Nuala Kennedy at the ICHC on May 21

With their furious fiddling, enchanting flute, gorgeous singing and high-energy step dancing, Andrea Beaton and Nuala Kennedy will bring serious girl power to the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, on Saturday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. This will be a return trip for the duo, who have previously performed at the ICHC with Nova Scotia Traditions. Backing Beaton and Kennedy on guitar is Louis-Charles Vigneau from Canada’s Prince Edward Island band Vishtèn.

Pre-concert music in Quinlan’s Pub from 6:30-7:15 p.m. will be performed by Atlantic Wave. One of Southeast Wisconsin’s most popular Celtic bands, their style is built around the harmonizing fiddles of Kaitlin Hahn and Ed Paloucek with lead vocals and guitar by Barry Houlehen and additional vocals and percussion by John Karr.

Originally from Ireland and now living in Scotland, Kennedy combines traditional and original material from both countries in a musically dynamic way and is recognized for her eclectic cross-genre work. Rhythms Magazine said that she beguiles with “a voice as luminous as her flute playing.” Kennedy’s second album, Tune In, was voted among the top 10 traditional albums of 2010 by the Irish Times.

Coming from Cape Breton’s extraordinary musical tradition as well as generations of musical Beatons and MacMasters (well-known fiddler Natalie MacMaster is a cousin), Beaton is making a name for herself with the power of her bow, the drive and swing of her timing, and the crispness of her attack. Her most recent album Branches won the 2010 East Coast Music Award in the Instrumental Recording of the Year category.

Beaton, Kennedy and Vigneau will present workshops in fiddle, flute/whistle, guitar and Cape Breton song and step dance during two sessions from 1-3:45 p.m. on May 21 at the ICHC. The fee is $25 for each workshop or $40 for two with discounts for groups of five or more.
