A few days after St. Patrick’s Day, Notre Dame University will host a special event to showcase the award-winning work of an Irish filmmaker who is making the first movie on the 1916 Easter Rebellion in Ireland. Kevin McCann has visited the Chicago area many times as he has been seeking support across the country from the Irish-American community to back his $10 million movie called ‘The Rising’.

On March 20th, the audience at Notre Dame University will hear about his endeavours over several years to develop ‘The Rising’, and get a chance to see two of his previous films. ‘The Boys of St. Columb’s’ is a BBC / RTE documentary film telling how education changed the lives of Irish people such as Seamus Heaney, John Hume, Bishop Edward Daly and Phil Coulter. ‘Volkswagen Joe’ is a multi-award-winning half-hour drama, also produced by McCann, which was the first film ever funded by the European Peace Fund and tells the story of a divided border community during the hunger strikes.

“It is a heartfelt honour to be invited by Patrick Griffin, Director of the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies to present my work which focuses on the Irish border where I’m from as well as issues relating to the troubles, faith and history”, said McCann, who’ll be appearing at Notre Dame the evening after John Kerry and Condoleeza Rice are scheduled to speak. “Notre Dame University has been unequalled in its dedication to tell the 1916 Rebellion story to a wide audience. Professor of Irish Studies, Briona NicDhiarmada produced the comprehensive documentary series narrated by Liam Neeson, which was funded by Notre Dame. Sparing no expense, it was a magnificent achievement remembering the men and women of 1916. We aim to repeat this success in the dramatic movie form with ‘The Rising’.”

While in Chicago, McCann will hold meetings with 2 Chicago-based investors backing his movie project, which was developed with support from the state film boards in Belfast and Dublin. He will then present his work at the Great Hunger Museum in Quinnipiac University and St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia on a mini-tour of universities and to speak with the Irish-American community about becoming executive producers of the movie ‘The Rising’.
