Great acting and life-size puppets bring enormous vitality to Prometheus Bound. The production is creative, imaginative and enlarges our appreciation of life.
The play is a “world premier translation of Aeschglus’ Tragedy.” It was commissioned by CityLit from Nicholas Rudall, who is an “internationally acclaimed translator of Greek drama.”

Rudall says it “is work of challenging beauty and CityLit is a perfect place to explore its lyricism.”

The power and beauty of the play are shown by the superb casting and acting. For that we can thank the director, Terry McCabe.

I have seen Kat Evans and Mark Pracht perform in recent plays, and they are marvelous actors. The music added much to the performance. It was composed by Kingsley Day. The great and exciting puppets are the work of Von Orthal Puppets.

The ancient Greeks believed in fate or destiny. Why do things happen the way they do? They believed that the Gods interfered in the lives and fate of humans. Today, we can answer some of the questions of destiny, but our reasons why things happened and our explanations are hardly better than those of the ancient Greeks. As Prometheus says, “nobody escapes fate or destiny, not even the Gods.”

Aeschylus wrote the tragedy two thousand five hundred years ago. Yet it electrified the audience.

Drama says about Greek tragedies, they “deal with the fundamental and unchanging human condition.”

About Greek tragedies, “Freud argues hat many other ’tragedies of destiny’ leave audiences unmoved. What makes this play so powerful? Could it be because there is something in it which makes a voice within us ready to recognize the compelling voice of destiny.”

In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the creator of humans and friend to humanity. Greek Gods and Heroes says about him, “he had secretly entered Olympus . . . and stole a glowing coal.

He hid the coal in the pith of a huge fennel stalk, and carried it down to earth to help humans. Controlling forgave them the power to build civilization.
To punish him, Zeus chained him to a mountain.

The unique and profound play, Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus will be presented by City Lit Theater not through June 10.

The theater is near the Bryn Mawr stop on the Red Line, located at 1020 W Bryn Mawr Ave. (It is in the Edgewater Presbyterian Church.)
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm.
Sundays at 3 pm.

Tickets from $28 to $32 with discounts for seniors, students and military.
