Greg McVicker, J.P. Sexton, and Mark Rickerby met at iBAM!, the Irish Books, Arts, and Music Celebration held in Chicago each Fall. Out of that fortuitous meeting this fine trinity of Irish writers decided to write a book together.

All three of these writers had fathers, and Grandfathers whose antics and personalities appear more fiction like than true life.

When they realized that they each come from such an off-the-wall strain, they decided that their collective material was too good not to share with the world!

Also included in the book is a story which highlights the Irish American Heritage Center, iBAM, and a few other surprises too!

Advance Testimonials - Four Green Fields
“The read is an exhilarating seesaw of emotions that straddles both sides of the Atlantic covering immigration, family survival in a war zone and a playful indulgence in Irish culture lessons on perseverance. The ‘voices’ induce a knack for storytelling to a cooperative experience. The universal theme of cultural nourishment is central to the remembered stories and circumstances of growing up with the otherness of one’s inherited bloodline.
There is a sagacity of self-analysis that becomes apparent with a reflective nod to the fourth voice as a muse. Apparently, all three voices echo individual tales, but the reflection morphs into a conventional attitude and universal sameness that becomes an important gift of friendship.

My experience in reading this was the acknowledgement of what was learned and what should never be forgotten. The collaboration brewed up a special blend of memoir that resonates in my mind and will continue to give me laughter and some tears, even as I write here.” -    Barbara H. O’Daly

“There is a saying that there are only two types of people in the world, the Irish and those who wish they were. “Four Green Fields’ does indeed welcome the reader home to the Emerald Isle with vivid memories of the times known as The Troubles.
With prose and poetry, the authors lead us on a nostalgic and sometimes irreverent journey through their lives and those of their families.
“Four Green Fields” is an amazing collection of memories both touching and humorous, giving the reader a rare and fascinating glimpse into the lives and times of these Irish authors and their families. “Four Green Fields” is highly recommended.”

About the Authors

Greg McVicker
- Irish Author and Poet, Greg McVicker, was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during a period of sectarian hatred and a violent, political war known as 'The Troubles'. Along with his siblings, his parents chose to leave behind their own beloved families, and their homeland, for a better chance at life and ending up relocating to Winnipeg. This began what Greg describes as an 'Everlasting Homesickness'. In his professional career as a Social Worker, Greg has focused his efforts in working with Canada's First Nations and in bringing much needed awareness to their own daily struggles, social injustices and inequities. Greg is unwavering in his efforts to shed light on various social injustices that people have experienced in their daily lives, both individually and collectively, but are often left to suffer in silence.

John Sexton - The Big Yank, written by J.P. Sexton.
J.P. Sexton grew up in the extreme North of Ireland, on a peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean.

The area is so far “off the map,” that very few tourists have made it up that far – hardly surprising when one considers that most Irish people have not ventured that far North either.

As a result of its remote and wild nature, the people of Inishowen seem to be a different breed from the rest of Ireland and one could even say, from the rest of Donegal. It is this untethered nature of the people and the wild nature of the landscape which inspired J.P. to start writing as a young boy.

Like other Irishmen before him, J.P. learned how to be resourceful and to face challenges head-on. This inherent survival mode and adaptability has stood him well over the decades and the thousands of miles he has journeyed through life’s odyssey.

No matter how many continents he has crossed, or how long he has been away, he can always hear the call of his ancestors whispering to him on the wind when it is time for him to return home. The peace of mind and soul which he finds in his native Donegal, is like no other place on earth.

Mark Rickerby - He’s a writer, screenwriter, songwriter, singer and voice actor. He’s the co-creator and head writer of an upcoming TV western series called Big Sky.
He has contributed eighteen stories to Chicken Soup for the Soul books and fiction stories to magazines such as Black Belt, Inside Kung Fu, Nostalgia, Dirt Rag and Whole Life Times.

He co-authored The Other Belfast, my father's memoir about growing up in Belfast, Northern Ireland between 1935 and 1957 before that town became known for all the wrong reasons.

It is the story of a child's struggle to bond with a distant father, to survive the schoolyards and streets where boys emulated "hard men" role models, to understand the divisions between the Irish people, and to simply be a child in a rough and tumble world.

From the sublime joys of love and friendship, to the terror of nighttime bombing raids by the German Luftwaffe during World War II, The Other Belfast is a journey of the spirit into a long-forgotten world as seen through the eyes of an adventurous and irrepressibly joyful child.

He is the author of a poem about grieving, How We Survive. Mark has received many touching emails from people telling him this poem helped them grieve lost loved ones in a healthy way.
