THE 58TH ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO FOLK FESTIVAL will leap from the minds of the planning committee to the stage in one month!  The University of Chicago Folklore Society will present evening concerts in Leon Mandel Hall (1131 E. 57th St.) on Friday and Saturday, 9-10 February 2018.  Free workshops in music and dance will take place during the day on Saturday, 10 February, in nearby Ida Noyes Hall (1212 E. 59th St.). There is plentiful free parking on the street.  Tickets will go on sale online on 30 January, at Get Tickets Here!.

As of today, the artist lineup includes:

JAROCHICANOS – Jarocho and fandango music of Vera Cruz, Mexico.  This music community embraces and shares its rich musical heritage.

DAN GELLERT – Dan will shine on Friday as a solo old-time fiddle and banjo player, and combine with STEVE ROSEN (banjo, guitar) and FRED CAMPEAU (guitar, fiddle, banjo) of the Volo Bogtrotters on Saturday.

MIKE COMPTON AND FRIENDS – This bluegrass band is led by a contemporary bluegrass mandolin virtuoso.  Mike was a charter member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band and has received many awards.  He was featured on the Grammy Award-winning soundtrack for “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

PAULINE CONNELLY AND JONATHAN WHITALL - Pauline is a protegee of great Irish banjo player Brendan Mulkere, and is a welcome addition to many Irish ensembles.  Piano player Jonathan is a long-time friend of our Festival, and performs in the Cosmic Otters and Chicago Reel dance bands.

MARY LANE AND FRIENDS – Mary will offer scorching West Side blues vocals, backed by rockin’ electric accompaniment (Illinois Slim on bass, Dean Haas on drums, Billy Flynn on guitar, Frank Krakowski on guitar).

SHERYL CORMIER BAND – The “Queen of Cajun Music” brings her accordion and band back north to warm up dancers’ hearts and feet.  Sheryl is a proud member of the Cajun French Music Hall of Fame.

THE WESTERN ELSTONS – This Chicago-based band takes the party to Hyde Park with its blend of classic country, honkytonk, and western swing, played by Scott Ligon (guitar and lead vocals), Casey McDonough, (bass and vocals), Joel Paterson, (pedal steel guitar), and Alex Hall, (drums).

BAGPIPES – Each concert will be piped in by a stalwart member of the City of Chicago Pipe Band.
