Fr. Sean Mc Manus and John Samuelsen meeting in Washington

Fr. Mc Manus, President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus, has had a very long on-going association with the American Labor Movement.

He founded the Irish National Caucus on February 6, 1974. In February 1975, the Executive Council of the AFL-CIO invited him to Bal Harbor to brief them on the Irish issue. The Executive Council then endorsed the Irish National Caucus. Then about ten years later, the Executive Council invited Fr. Mc Manus to brief them on the Mac Bride Principles—a corporate code of conduct for American companies doing business in Northern Ireland. The AFL-CIO became the first significant group to endorse the Mac Bride Principles.

Fr. Mc Manus said: “I have met every President of the AFL-CIO since George Meany to the current president, Richard Trumka—and many other great national Labor leaders. It has meant the world to me that American Labor has always supported unity, justice and peace in Ireland. And I was honored to meet John Samuelsen, International President of the Transport Workers

Union, and former president of the famed Local 100 in New York. John is well on his way to becoming another legendary Union leader.”

Fr. Mc Manus continued: “One of the first things John said to me was that as a kid in Brooklyn it was drilled into him that “26 plus 6 = One (Twenty Six Counties plus Six Counties equals One Ireland). He has a passionate, well informed, activist interest in Ireland — not just a sentimental interest but one grounded in justice, dignity and solidarity. He is a very impressive and formidable Union man. God bless him.”
