Happy New Year from all at Irish Veterans.  We wish you and yours a healthy, happy and successful 2018.

As you may know, we will open a small Irish Veterans Museum in Kinsale, Co Cork on 10 March.  The first exhibition will focus on Irish links to the Medal of Honor, centred around the original medal received by Michael Gibbons, born and raised in Co. Mayo. This will be the first such exhibition outside the United States.

Did you know:

Roughly 3,500 Medals of Honor have been awarded since 1863
Over 2,100 of these Medals were received by men of Irish heritage
At least 258 Medals went to Irish-born servicemen (we have no idea of the actual number, as many Irish-born immigrants gave their home of record as their first address in the US)
There is NO knowledge whatsoever of these men or their stories in the Irish consciousness

Michael Gibbons emigrated, joined the US Navy and was decorated for heroism under fire off the coast of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Amazingly, a fellow Mayo-man, a US Marine named Philip Gaughan, was in the same small boat during the action, and he also received the Medal of Honor.

It is unprecedented that a genuine Medal will be displayed outside the US, and it is highly appropriate that this will be in Ireland.

Internationally-renowned historian and author Damian Shiels will curate the exhibition.

Irish Veterans are seeking help and support to get the Museum up and running.   We have a LOT of work to do, including painting, lighting, flooring, creating display cases and boards, security measures, advertising, etc.  All the nuts & bolts stuff.

We are asking you to consider if your company, you yourself, or any colleagues or friends can help us with getting the Museum doors opened on the 10th of March.

The group of donors will be known as “The Protectors”, in honor of SEAL LT Michael Murphy (Medal of Honor), for whom our first Chapter is named, and whose family roots are in Co Cork.  He was nicknamed ”The Protector” for fighting off bullies who picked on smaller kids during his school days, and that mindset never left him.
Murph gave his life for his men in 2005, during a savage firefight in the mountains of Afghanistan (documented in the film “Lone Survivor).

We are asking corporate Protectors for a EUR 10K donation, fellow Charities/Veterans groups for whatever they can give, and individual Protectors for 1K.   All Protectors will have free Museum access for 24 months.

This may seem to be asking a lot, but these men gave a lot…most Medals of Honor are posthumously awarded.

Our corporate Protectors’ logos will be carried on advertising, will have a full-page ad in our Museum brochure, on the website, and will be able to use the Museum for Corporate events, launches, client receptions, etc. for 2 days P/A.

The Port of Cork have informed us that this year, over 400,000 cruise ship passengers will visit Cork/Kinsale area.  That number is in addition to the estimated 170,000 regular tourist foot-fall.  We will be VERY busy, and our Museum brochure will be a take-home keepsake for the vast majority of visitors, so advertising in that will produce excellent exposure, both here in Ireland as well as in the US.

We hope you will consider joining us in this endeavour – and please do spread the word.  We need all the help we can get to give these men and their stories the recognition they so richly deserve,  having been forgotten by Ireland for so long.
