Sister Joan and her Sister Kate were immigrants from Ireland. Sister Joan was a deeply spiritual person who encouraged my father when he was struggling to get through his internship at a Catholic hospital. Then sixteen years later my father was careless while hiking home from a mine in Idaho and ended up trapped on a ledge with no apparent escape. After virtually giving up, Dr. Weber recalled something Sister Joan had said to him. (She seems to have been clairvoyant.) The recollection prompted my father to leap to a distant point of safety.
