Savanna Rae’s Solo Show Puts Women in Starring Roles Drawn from Ancient Irish Myths

Chicago writer and performer Savanna Rae gives passionate, playful and sometimes pain-filled voices to high-spirited ancient women too seldom heard from in Celtic mythology in her dynamic original solo show, “Daughters of Ire,” Thurs., Feb. 22, Fri., Feb. 23, Sat., Feb. 24, 7 p.m., and Sun., Feb. 25, 2 p.m., in the Black Box Studio Theatre, Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago.

Inspired by the collective memory of women language from ancient Celtic legends, Rae uses stories, songs and that showcase the heroic, heretical and sometimes horrific experiences of women facing a world caught up in violence. Reanimating a culture that can be, according to Rae, both beautiful and dark, Rae said of her production, “It is not sugar-coated.” She added that “Daughters of Ire” is an honest celebration of women and women’s stories. The Ulster Cycle, one of the four great cycles of medieval Celtic mythology, relates the male-dominated heroic adventures of legendary figures such as the Irish warrior Cú Chulainn and battles such as the Cattle Raid of Cooley.  Digging deep into the stories of warriors, battles and kings, Rae’s performance exposes the stories of fascinating and fearsome women who were too often relegated to secondary roles by the traditional Irish storytellers.

Last year, Rae’s performance at the Beverly Arts Center earned a 2017 Chicago Theatre Award through The Hawk theater website. The show was originally produced by the Other Theatre Company (TOTC) in 2015, and was nominated as Best New Work by Broadway World Chicago that year.

Tickets for “Daughters of Ire” are $22 ($20 for Beverly Arts Center members), and available at the Beverly Arts Center, 111th and south Western Avenue, via phone at 773-445-3838 or online at www.beverlyartcenter.org
