Gaye McDonald has been a primary school teacher for almost two decades. Having researched Irish folk legends for her classes, she decided to adapt them, hopefully making them even more colourful, meaningful and memorable for children around the world who love stories.
Gaye hopes to instill in children a passion for Irish Folklore, which they, in turn, will pass on to future generations.
About the Project
Gaye has adapted many legends from Irish Folklore. It’s a labour of love as she invites the most charismatic Irish actors to narrate and highly skilled Irish artists to illustrate, each book showing a different style of art making sure to incorporate native Irish trees, animals and birds etc. in the illustrations.
She has bilingually published the first two books/cds, St. Patrick’s Story for Children/Sceal Phadraig Naofa Do Phaisti and St Brigid’s Cloak/Cloca Naomh Brid. Both legends have been narrated in English by the infamous Irish/American actress, Maureen O’Hara. The Irish versions were narrated by Alan Titley, Professor Emiritus, Department of Irish, UCC and Eanna Ni Lamhna, author of Wild Dublin and Wild Things at School. Eanna is a Broadcaster on RTE’s Mooney Goes Wild and TV3s the Six O’Clock Show and is currently Vice President of the Tree Council of Ireland.
The illustrations for St Patrick’s Story for Children were painted by the award winning Kerry artist, Ms. Deborah O’Keeffe.
The illustrations for St Brigid’s Cloak were painted by Ms Anita Foley, a fellow primary teacher who teaches with her in St Laurences National School, Baldoyle, Dublin, Ireland.
Very importantly, 10% of the cost of each book/cd/eBook/iBook goes to the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation who provide professional nursing home care for children below the age of five (presently)
